PETALING JAYA: A fiery clash is in store as Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) head up north for their AFC Champions League Elite last 16 first-leg tie against Buriram at the Chang Arena on Tuesday.
The Southern Tigers can easily recall the unflattering remarks made by Buriram president Newin Chidchob about the Super League champions last year.
Speaking to the Thai media, Newin was reported to have said: JDT are not that strong and I have to say that the Malaysian League does not match the standards of the Thai League.
“Even though Johor have brought in many foreign players, there isn’t much to worry about.
‘‘I suggest that their president invest a bit more. Next year, when we meet again, it will be more exciting.”
JDT owner and Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim must have taken those words to heart.
The team are now better equipped with the additions of Spanish flanker Samu Castillejo and Jonathan Vieira, Brazilian defensive midfielder Anselmo Moraes, Spanish midfielder Roque Mesa and centreback Alvaro Gonzalez.
With JDT having held Buriram 0-0 during the competition’s league stage at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Dec 3 last year, they can now enter the battle field as equals in the knockout clash.
JDT captain Jordi Amat believes they now have what it takes to take down their strong rivals in their own backyard.
“We now have an amazing group and we have no limits. We have the hunger to prove something in this competition,’’ said the 32-year-old Amat, who has featured for Swansea.
Coach Hector Bidoglio said they had a good few days to prepare for the clash after their 2-0 win over Perak on Feb 24 sealed their 11th straight Super League title.
“In those few days, the emphasis was on maintaining our intensity, dynamism and focus. We’re ready to get a good result in Thailand.’’
The second leg will be played at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on March 11.
