KL’s back-up keeper Hafizul has firm grip on regular spot

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur goalkeeper Hafizul Hakim (pic) can’t believe the good hand he has been dealt by the City Boys.

The 31-year-old was initially signed as a back-up to first-choice custodian Azri Ghani.

But the lanky Ipoh-born Hafizul has made the position his own in the last few months, catching coach Miroslav Kuljanac’s eye with some impressive shot-stopping.

He has started the last six games in all competitions despite the 25-year-old Azri, who was a regular in 23 games before being sidelined, returning from an ankle injury two weeks ago.

Hafizul admitted that he was surprised that the coach has continued to play him in goal.

“In fact, I’m shocked that the coach is still relying on me despite Azri being fit again. He’s our number one keeper and is also a regular in the national team,’’ said Hafizul, who has also featured for Penang and Perak before joining KL.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity and will keep performing well to help the team finish in a good position.’’

Hafizul said the situation has not created any tension between him and Azri.

“Azri and I get along fine and we’re professionals who appreciate healthy competition. We want to make each other better for the benefit of the team,’’ he added.

“During matches when I’m playing, he would share tips on what I can do better and when he plays, I am there to guide him as well.’’

KL are now sixth in the Super League with 25 points from 20 games.
