PETALING JAYA: Is Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) goal machine Bergson Da Silva (pic) already a naturalised Malaysian player?
The Brazil-born player put the Malaysian flag on his latest Instagram profile has sparked various assumptions among football fans in the country.
The fans hinted that the striker who celebrated his 34th birthday on Sunday, who is the current Super League leading scorer with 22 goals, may have obtained the status of a naturalised Harimau Malaya player.
However, there is still no official confirmation whether Da Silva has obtained the status of a naturalised player or otherwise.
Previously, the Regent of Johor who is also the owner of JDT, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, announced that Bergson along with Pahang’s Manuel Hidalgo are among the candidates for Malaysian naturalisation.
“Bergson can be naturalised as a short-term plan after playing for five years in Malaysia,” he said.
If it is true that Bergson has obtained the status of a naturalised player, it will be an added value for the national squad, especially Harimau Malaya, who have often lacked bite in the attacking area.
His presence will definitely strengthen the squad managed by Australian Peter Cklamovski who is currently also in the process of getting in touch with several heritage players from abroad.
JDT will next play Perak in Iskandar Puteri on Feb 27 and have a chance to be crowned Super League champions if they win the match.
