PETALING JAYA: There was a time when just the sight of the lanky K. Nanthakumar in midfield was feared by the opposition.
Even former national coach, the late Allan Harris once said he wished he had “11 Nanthakumars” in his national team, such was the players’ work rate and tenacity.
Now, the former national player is back in action for Negri Sembilan, as head coach.
After years serving as assistant coach for several clubs, Nanthakumar, 46, will be on the touchline as head coach, replacing Azzmi Aziz, who has been “rested” by the club.
The 1.86m tall Nanthakumar was announced as the new coach after a run of poor form which has seen the Negri side in 12th place in the 13-team Super League, with only three points from seven games.
Nanthakumar has a daunting first task against Kedah at the Darulaman Stadium today.
“The management have not placed any expectations on me but I want to do something good for the club,” said the former Kelantan and Perak player.
“I hope we can push for a draw against Kedah, which would be good since it is an away game. A win would be a bonus. Kedah have good local and foreign players.
“Before the season started, we played a friendly against them, and lost 0-2. But in a game, anything can happen.
“In terms of quality, we know Kedah have better players as their budget is higher but I have players giving their all during training.”
The sudden coaching change could have an impact on the Negri dressing room but Nanthakumar gave an assurance that the situation was under control.
“The management spoke to the players when the decision was made and urged the boys to give their fullest commitment to the new coaching line-up,” he said.
“Captain (Nasrullah Haniff Johan) has told me that the boys will give their fullest commitment.
“I am glad that was done by the club and players.
“I have known many in this team for three years now as I have been assistant coach with Negri since 2022. Since I took over head coaching duties three days ago, training sessions have been good.”
