PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) striker Bergson Da Silva will not rest on his laurels.

He has been hailed as the top foreign player in the Malaysian League and the recognition has only whetted his appetite to achieve more for the Southern Tigers when the Super League season starts in May.

The 33-year-old was named the Best Foreign Player in the National Football Awards for the second time in a row last week.

The honour was apt, after all, he had scored 33 goals in all domestic competitions for JDT last year.

The striker who joined the club in 2021, had also helped the team win the Super League, Charity Shield, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup last year.

He can slow down if he wants to but that’s not the motto in life.

“When you achieve something great, sometimes you tend to relax a little but that will not be the case for me with JDT. You can never relax,” said Da Silva.

“In Portuguese, we say ‘nao posso ficar muito tranquilo’ (I can’t rest too easy). I’m going to continue to score goals. I will give my best effort and remain professional.

“As a team, we want to retain all the titles we won.

JDT are hopeful of winning their 11th consecutive Super League title for a start, and ultimately pocket another quadruple.

“We will continue to draw inspiration from our past successes to take us to great heights again.

Da Silva said unity is JDT’s key to success.

“Of course, I’m proud to win the award for the second time. I never expected my career to take off in a great way here. All this however would not have been possible if not for team work,” he said.

“The club, players and coaches are successful because we treat each other like family.

Can this season be Da Silva’s best ever?

“ The 2022 season was the best for me because it was like a dream. I did not expect to score many goals,” said Da Silva, who impressed on the domestic scene by scoring a whopping 46 goals in 35 games.

Motivated by his second consecutive award, expect Da Silva to be top in the scoresheet once again.
