Multiple title winner Santo calls time on his career in football

PETALING JAYA: A prolific career has come to an end.

Brazilian striker Diogo Santo (pic) has officially announced his retirement after ending the season with Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

The 36-year-old announced his decision on social media as he looks to take his next chapter in life.

With the Southern Tigers this season, the former Buriram United and BG Pathum United player scored seven goals and made two assists in 13 domestic games.

Santo had two stints with JDT, joining the club in 2019 for two seasons before rejoining for a final season in 2023.

Santo won three Malaysia Super League titles, three Charity Shields, one FA Cup and two Malaysia Cups during his time with JDT.

In total, he played 46 games for them, scoring 26 goals.

It was in Thailand where he made his name, scoring 142 goals and 46 assists in 191 Thai League games for both Buriram and BG Pathum.

He also won the Thai League title four times, three with Buriram and one with BG Pathum.

Santo also played in Europe for Greek club Olympiakos, helping them to win three league titles during his time there from 2008 to 2013.

In Brazil, he played for Portuguesa, Flamengo and Santos.

With such credentials, moving on wasn’t an easy.

“It took me some time to think about how to express what I felt at that moment, mainly because I wasn’t sure how to put so many different emotions into one text, or more precisely how to find the right words to say goodbye to football,” he said.

“Passion, dedication, adrenaline, teamwork and pleasure in playing this game have been my motivations since my childhood.

“I had the most beautiful and inspiring trip despite the unforeseen events and some frustrations. A rollercoaster ride made up of many victories but also many falls.

“I don’t even know where to start to convey my gratitude and thank all the people who have been part of my career, presidents, coaches, without forgetting all the people who work behind the scenes, such as doctors, physiotherapists, wardrobe workers.

“To the players, I had the honour of working with, both as teammates and rivals, thank you very much.

“To my fans and followers, I say that without you none of this would be possible. Thank you for your energy, passion and dedication.

“Finally, a special thank you to my family. Your love and patience allowed me to live my dream most beautifully. Thank you for always being by my side, in good times and bad!

“Thank you, football! I say goodbye today as a player, but I’m sure you will always remain present in my life!”
