PETALING JAYA: Terengganu finished sixth in the Super League, qualified for the FA Cup semi-finals and played in the Malaysia Cup final.
With achievement like that, it’s little wonder that Croatian coach Tomislav Steinbruckner is staying on for the new season.
After ending the season by beating Perak 3-0 in their Super League match at the Sultan Mizan Stadium in Gong Badak on Sunday, Steinbruckner revealed the news, saying he was aiming higher for the 2024-2025 season.
To do that, he will have JDT’s playmaker Safawi Rasid in his side next season.
“I would like to announce that I have signed a new deal with the club and look forward to a brighter future with them. Next year, we must do better,” he said.
“I would not say this season was perfect. But it is my first season. New team, new environment, young players, new imports and new staff. We were learning.
“We were also unbeaten in the AFC Cup despite not getting to the knockout stages.
Steinbruckner also shared the good news that the Turtles are close to sealing a loan deal for Safawi.
“I know some players are returning to their hometown, like Safawi (he hails from Dungun), who will join us on loan. I know some other players have also been signed but I will let the management announce the deals.
“I have my ideas and told the management the areas we need to improve. I want to get players that fit my plans and tactics. Sometimes, I make mistakes, but I always want to ensure this team do well.”
In the game against Perak, Terengganu’s goals were scored by Croatian striker Ivan Mamut (seventh minute), playmaker Engku Nur Shakir Nur Yaacob (17th) and winger Norhakim Hssan (81st).
The win saw Terengganu ending the league campaign with 40 points in 26 games.
“Looking at the atmosphere today, I am happy. My players did well, the fans were amazing, I am happy to stay on with this club,” said Steinbruckner.
