Fiery Sherman hopes to douse KL’s hot run

PETALING JAYA: Pahang striker Kpah Sherman is looking for revenge against Kuala Lumpur in the Malaysia Cup.

The 31-year-old Liberian scored both goals in the Elephants’ 2-0 win against Harini in the last 16 second-leg match at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Sunday to take his team to the quarter-finals on a 5-2 aggregate.

They had earlier won the first leg 3-2.

Sherman’s first goal in the 42nd minute was a beauty as he received a looping header from Baqiuddin Shamsudin off an Azrif Nasrulhaq cross and unleashed a superb bicycle kick and eight minutes later, he finished off a Sergio Aguero cross with a header for the winning goal.

Pahang will face the City Boys in the two-legged quarter-finals on Sept 15 and Sept 23 respectively.

“We anticipate a good game against the 2021 champions. In our last game against them in June, we lost 1-2 in the Super League,” said Sherman.

“We want to fight hard and focus on getting our revenge against them in the Malaysia Cup.”

This season, Sherman has scored 12 goals in all competitions, and naturally is the team’s top scorer but he was pleased with the first goal scored against Harini.

“It is one of the best goals in my career. It was instinctive. When I saw the header from Baqiuddin, plus it was at the right height, I decided to take that bicycle kick and I’m glad it went in,” he said.

“I had a chance to score a bicycle kick against Perak in the Super League last month too but it didn’t connect well.

Sherman has been ever-present for Pahang as the team had struggled with injuries to other strikers like Lucas Espindola and Rafael Silva.

Both players have now resumed training and Sherman is looking forward to their return, especially in the Super League.

“It’s not a pressure to be the lone striker but it’s good to have the others returning, as we will be stronger for the rest of the matches. I’m sure others will step up and score goals.

“Our aim is still top three or four, and we have seven more matches to decide that outcome,” said the father of one child.

They are now ranked fifth with 37 points from 19 games.
