PETALING JAYA: A hamstring niggle earlier this year stuttered Ryan Lambert’s progress with Kuala Lumpur as he missed the first two Super League games and struggled in the next three.
But he has finally managed to shrug off his misfortunes.
In the last three matches, the 24-year-old impressed with his industry, calmness and vision in midfield to ensure they won all their games against Sabah (2-0), Perak (1-0) and Kedah (3-2).
And Ryan is eager to continue with his progress as he wants to make a real impact for the City Boys as the season progresses.
“The start was slow and rough, but things are changing now,” said the former Den Bosch player.
“I had a slight hamstring tear which I picked up from a friendly game that took me out for the first few games of the season.
The injury is in the past now. I feel like I’m getting better in every game.
“I’ve struggled with my fitness a lot these last few seasons due to injury and Covid-19. And that’s the area I have to work at it again.
“I still feel like I’m not quite where I used to be. I’ll focus on it during training.”
Kuala Lumpur’s midfield this season is stacked as they have top players like Sebastian Avanzini, Akram Mahinan, Zhafri Yahya, Paulo Josue, D. Kenny Pallraj and Firdaus Saiyadi.
But Ryan remains an integral part of Bojan Hodak’s plans but also relishes the competition for places on the team
“I think the fight for this position had always been competitive even since I arrived in Kuala Lumpur. I also think that’s important because we all have to earn the right to play and be confidence in our own quality.
“Regardless of the rivalry, the relationship among the players has always been good.
Kuala Lumpur will next take on Police in the Super League at the Cheras Football Stadium on Saturday.
Ryan is looking forward to facing the Cops, who have made lives difficult for big teams in the league.
“It’s going to be a challenge they have not conceded many goals so far this season. They are a team similar to ours. We must do what we have been doing recently and create as much as chances as possible.”
Kuala Lumpur are seventh in the league with 12 points from eight matches.
