Giants’ look to playmaker Orozco

PETALING JAYA: Selangor are looking for some Venezuelan flavour to zest up their midfield and ensure ample ammunition for their wingers and strikers.

Enter former Wolfsburg midfielder Yohandry Orozco (pic) who has been confirmed as the club’s eighth foreign player. Orozco has been earmarked as the chief playmaker for the club.

Orozco, born on March 19, 1991, began his professional career with the Venezuelan club Maracaibo when he was 16.

His most recent club was the Colombian side Deportes Tolima, where he appeared 114 times and contributed 12 goals and 18 assists in two seasons.

Among the 31-year-old’s achievements, Orozco lifted his first cup with Venezuelan club Deportivo Ta chira winning the Primera Division in the 2014/2015 season.

He won two cups with the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League (NASL) Regular Season and the NASL Soccer Bowl in 2015/2016. Following that, he won the Primera A title with Deportes Tolima in 2018, 2019, and 2021.

Selangor coach Tan Cheng Hoe believes Orozco has the skills and strengths to help stabilise the team this season.

“The team now seem to need a team general. I hope Orozco can dictate our game pattern and be able to stabilise the team’s attack with whatever we are lacking,” he said to the Selangor media team.

“Orozco’s advantage is that he has excellent ball control and, at the same time, can help his teammates to score goals.

“In addition, he is also able to help with set pieces as well, which is an advantage I hope will be seen on the field later.”

Orozco is the seventh and last recruit to be introduced to the first team after Selangor introduced V. Ruventhiran, Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee, Faisal Halim, Noor Al-Rawabdeh, Rauf Salifu and Ayron Del Valle.
