Selangor getting it right on the left


Gem of a signing: International V. Ruventhiran will be playing for Selangor in the Super League next season.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor are not going to be left behind in the new Super League season, judging by their signings.

They have announced the signing of versatile V. Ruventhiran, who can play as left wingback, fullback and winger. The 21-year-old, who is now with the national team for the AFF Mitsubishi Cup, will have a lot of competition in the team.

Selangor already have Fazly Mazlan and Ahmad Zikri Khalili in the left defensive position while on the flanks, they have Norhakim Hassan.

Not only that, they are close to signing left-winger Faisal Halim and centreback Ahmad Khuzaimi Piee, who is known for his left-footed set-pieces.

Ruventhiran, who was once a President’s Cup and youth player for Selangor, is elated to be part of the team again and plans to an impact with the first team now.

“I have played with the President’s Cup side and Selangor youth teams before, so being with Selangor is not something new for me, but I am happy to wear the team’s jersey again.

“I want to play with the first team because Selangor are big and have amazing supporters. I’m ready to play and give everything for the team.”The club have also announced that they have retained players like Jordanian centreback Yazan Al-Arab, Ghanaian midfielder Alex Agyarkwa, Myanmar playmaker Hein Htet Aung and Ghanaian centreback Richmond Ankrah.

As for the local players, they confirmed the likes of Zikri, Fazly, Norhakim, midfielders Brendan Gan, Aliff Haiqal Lau, Syahir Bashah, Mukhairi Ajmal, centrebacks Sharul Nazeem Zulphakar and Harith Haiqal Hanafi, rightback Quentin Cheng and goalkeeper Samuel Somerville and Khairulazhan Khalid.

Selangor coach Tan Cheng Hoe said he has been happy with how the squad is shaping up.

“I have been observing Ruven since my national team days. He is a player with great potential. His versatility is an asset, and I am looking forward to working with him,” he said.

“We have also retained a lot of young players. My idea is to make them long-term assets for Selangor.

“As for other recruitments, we will look to finalise things over the next one to two weeks.

“As for the foreigners we’ve retained, I am happy with them because they have adapted well to my coaching.”

Asked about Al-Arab, who many fans felt wasn’t good enough, Cheng Hoe said: “When I took over as coach, he performed well. I believe his experience will be important for Selangor.

“He is a regular for Jordan, and he played well under me. That’s why I decided to keep him.”
