PETALING JAYA: If there is one man who has been playing like he is in a “make or break” situation, it is Sabah’s tenacious midfielder Gary Steven Robbat (pic).
After years of going through injuries and surgeries which hampered his progress, the 29-year-old has been going great guns with Sabah this season.
Even though the Rhinos lost to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) 1-2 on Friday, Gary was one of the standouts in his role as a defensive playmaker.
Not only did he come up with crunching challenges and interceptions, but the former JDT and Melaka midfielder also made his presence felt in the attacking third with his through passes and shots.
“Despite the many injuries I had, Sabah took me in and I’m bent on repaying their faith,” said Gary.
“I’ve been given countless chances to play. The team surely can count on me.
“Every match is a make or break situation for me due to my age. So whatever opportunity I get, I intend to make full use of it.”
Next up, they face Terengganu at the Likas Stadium and Gary has promised to give another virtuoso performance in midfield.
He has so far made six appearances in all competitions for the Borneo side and aims to increase that to make up for all those years he had been injured.
“Every game is a big game for me. What’s important for us is to fight as a team.
“We will be out to display the same commitment against Terengganu. They are good in midfield, especially Habib Haroon and Manny Ott, who have impressed in the league so far.
“But, we have a plan to topple them.”
Sabah are second in the league with 22 points after 11 games, while Terengganu have 16 from nine matches.
