PETALING JAYA: Selangor goalkeeper Samuel Somerville (pic) will take on familiar faces at the Petaling Jaya Stadium today.
The 27-year-old, who has started the last three games for the Red Giants, is expected to face his former club Penang in their Super League encounter.
Penang may be bottom of the league with seven points after 10 games but Somerville said the northern side should not be underestimated, especially with new coach Zainal Abidin Hassan at the helm.
The Panthers are unbeaten in their last two games, and their last result was a stunner when they shocked Terengganu 2-1 on June 22.
Somerville, who played for two seasons with Penang from 2020 to 2021, said Penang are showing signs of recovery and cannot be taken lightly.
“When a new coach comes, players want to prove their abilities and be even more positive to push for a first XI spot. So that’s a plus for Penang,’’ he said.
“So we can’t underestimate them.”
Selangor are seventh in the Super League with 12 points from nine matches.
In their last game, the side led by Michael Feichtenbeiner edged Kuala Lumpur 1-0 in the FA Cup second round.
Somerville stood out in that match with some superb saves and hopes to catch the eye again against Penang.
“I want to maintain my form and continue working harder in every training session to keep my spot. Hopefully, my form will lead to a national call-up.”
