PETALING JAYA: Attacking midfielder Hein Htet Aung’s inspirational figure in his football career is Neymar.
Not only the playmaker from Myanmar idolises the Brazilian but the 19-year-old is playing like him too!
Known for his defence-splitting pass and neat crosses, the skilful Htet Aung has been one of the young standouts for the Red Giants in the Super League as he had notched six assists and two goals in just 10 starts.
And now that he has shown his prowess, Selangor are banking on Htet Aung to light up their Malaysia Cup campaign.
Selangor are in Group B with Terengganu, Perak and Kuching City. They open accounts against Perak tomorrow at the Petaling Jaya Stadium.
Htet Aung first played for their feeder team Selangor II in the Premier League and impressed in their seven matches, which saw him drafted by Selangor coach Karsten Neitzel.
It didn’t take him long to adapt to the top division as he shone in the league with his passing, vision, movement and also had a telepathic partnership with Super League golden boot winner Ifedayo Olusegun.
When asked the secret behind his meteoric rise, Htet Aung remained humble.
“I’m just doing what everyone is doing. I train every day with the team, and I go to the gym when I have free time with my friends. Plus, Neymar has inspired me a lot with his creative skills,” said Htet Aung.
“When I joined Selangor II, of course, the main aim was to get to the Super League team, and I am happy that the chance eventually came.
“I worked hard for that opportunity because, for me, Super League is one of the best leagues in South-East Asia.”
Htet Aung now hopes to help the Klang Valley club win the Malaysia Cup for the 34th time.
“I hope we can do well. The aim is to win it! It’s not just for me, but for all my teammates who are eyeing it,” he said.
Htet Aung thanked Neitzel and his teammates for his form in the Super League.
“Coach gave me a chance and he believed in me.
“He is the best coach for me in Super League.
“Also, I have a good friendship with all the players, which is why it’s very easy to play with them.
“It’s such an honour to play for Selangor. It has been a great experience for me.”
