PETALING JAYA: Mukhairi Ajmal. Remember that name.

The 17-year–old produced some virtuoso performances for the national junior team in the Asean Football Federation Under-19 Championships.

And his PKNP club coach Abu Bakar Fadzim (pic) is beaming. The coach now expects the youngster to make a mark in the ongoing Malaysia Cup.

Mukhairi will not play against Super League side Johor Darul Ta’zim today in their Group B match at Johor Baru’s Larkin Stadium as he played in the President’s Cup quarter-final yesterday but the coach expects him to be in the team for the home games against UiTM (Sept 13) and Petaling Jaya City (Sept 17).

“I watched his performance in Ho Chin Minh City on television, and he looks assured in the middle. People are talking about him, and that’s only good for his development,” said the coach, known fondly as Burn.

“He looked confident against more-fancied sides. I think he will play a part in our Malaysia Cup run.”

Mukhairi has come on twice as a substitute in the Super League and the coach says there is no denying his talent but the youngster has a long way to go.

“ I would love to give him more playing time but Mukhairi needs to know that patience is a virtue.

“The critical thing here is to turn his talent into consistent performances. He has the physique, technical ability and mindset but it’s no good if he produces three or four good performances but falters in the rest.

“At the moment, his progress looks good.”

Against JDT, Abu Bakar knows Larkin Stadium will be a cauldron of fire for his team as they try to improve on the 2-2 draw at the Manjung Municipal Council Stadium on Aug 16.

“Stealing a win or a point is not going to be easy in Larkin. They are powerful at home.

“But we have a fighting chance. We want to be in the quarter-finals too.

“Since being promoted to the Super League, we’ve not beaten JDT at Larkin. I want my boys to break the duck. I will not tolerate any silly mistakes or poor decision making.

“We have to surprise them at their home ground.”

JDT top the group with seven points, but PJ City are just a point behind them. PKNP are third with four points, while UiTM have yet to collect a point in three matches.
