Island of sorrow

PETALING JAYA: Premier League outfit Penang’s joy turned to sorrow when they were barred from competing in the Super League.

The islanders, who won promotion with champions Sabah, will have to remain in the second-tier league after running foul with world football’s governing body, FIFA.

The Panthers have been docked six points by FIFA for failing to settle former defender Reinaldo Lobo’s wages within the stipulated deadline.

Penang have dropped to seventh spot on 24 points with fourth-placed Police gaining promotion to the Super League next year.

Penang ended their season in third place behind Johor Darul Ta’zim II. But the Johor club are not eligible for promotion as they are a feeder club to Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim.

Kelantan were also docked three points by FIFA for the same offence on April 11.

The Penang Football Association (FAP) found themselves in hot water with FIFA when they were ordered to pay Lobo, who played for Penang from 2015 to 2017 – US$97,085.05 (RM399,556.93) on March 29 and were given 30 days to settle it.

The FAP only made the full payment on July 1 which was past the deadline set by FIFA.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) made numerous appeals to FIFA to drop the disciplinary action against Penang but it proved futile.

FAM secretary general Stuart Ramalingam said they sympathise with Penang.

“FAM would like to advise and warn other affiliates not to take instructions regarding penalties imposed by FIFA or AFC for granted,” said Stuart.

“This is because the consequences will eventually have to be borne by the respective teams, and with points deduction involved hence affecting the team’s league position.”
