Selangor outclass Melaka United to move to top of Super League

KUALA LUMPUR: Spaniard hotshot Rufino Segovia's goalscoring spree continued as he hit a second brace in as many matches to steer Selangor to a comprehensive 4-1 win over Melaka United in the Super League at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Segovia took only seven minutes from the whistle to put the Red Giants ahead when he struck home from close range following a long pass from skipper Razman Roslan.

The visitors, however, rallied and drew level through Thiago Gomes' delightful free-kick from outside the box in the 30th minute.

Rufino had the chance to score his second from the spot when Amri Yahyah was brought down, but his shot was well saved by Melaka's stopper Muhd Zamir Selamat.

Melaka United resumed the second half with all guns blazing and had as many as three chances in the opening five minutes but did not manage to convert any.

Zamir went from hero to zero when his hesitant clearance went straight to midfielder Muhd Syahmi Safari, who easily slotted in to restore the lead for the home side.

With the tide turned in Selangor's favour, Segovia and Syahmi's wonderful strikes in the 66th and 89th minutes capped off a brilliant night for their team.

Segovia has now bagged four goals in two Super League starts.

With the result, Selangor joined Johor Darul Ta'zim as the only two teams with a 100% record, but Selangor pipped the latter to the top of the standings on goal difference.
