PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Cup debutants Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) are continuing to make waves in the competition.
They beat fellow Premier League outfit beat Negri Sembilan 2-0 in their Group A match at the Proton Stadium in Tanjung Malim yesterday thanks to a late brace from Brazilian striker Gilberto Fortunato to inch closer to the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals.
Fortunato scored in the 84th minute and two minutes into injury time.
PKNP coach Abu Bakar Fadzim (pic) was delighted to see Fortunato rediscovering his scoring touch.
“Fortunato didn’t score in our last five matches. So, this brace has come at the right time for us. I hope he will continue scoring after this,” said Abu Bakar after the match.
“Negri fielded their second stringers and had only one import player in the line-up because they are focusing on their promotion battle in the Premier League.
“Their second stringers gave us a good fight and we only managed to score towards the end of today’s match.
“For us, every match is important because we need to push ourselves to the maximum and see how we cope at this level.
“I need to thank the players because it’s their determination that is pushing the team forward. I hope they can keep up the good work.”
PKNP have collected seven points from three matches and Abu Bakar believes they are on the right track to qualify for the Malaysia Cup quarter-finals.
“I think we need more than 10 points to confirm our berth in the quarter-finals. We will now shift our focus to our Premier League match against Armed Forces on Friday,” said Abu Bakar.
“We are playing through a tight list of fixtures, so I want the players to take this as a test and keep pushing themselves.”
