Former Penang player Boon Kheng dies at 76


GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang football player and coach Lim Boon Kheng passed away here on Friday. He was 76.

The former Chung Ling High School teacher played for Penang in the late 60s and coached the islanders from 1975-80.

Boon Kheng was best known for being the last coach to guide Penang to the Malaysia Cup final in 1977. Penang lost 3-2 to Singapore.

He also led the Penang team to become champions of the 1976 Aga Khan Gold Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The tournament was an early version of the Asian club championship, and Boon Kheng’s Penang team were the only Malaysian side to have won the Aga Khan Gold Cup during its tenure from 1958-82.

oon Kheng leaves behind wife Koay Guat Cheng. His funeral is at 11am Saturday at the Batu Gantong Funeral Parlour.
