GLASGOW: National track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang ended his Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign by finishing 10th in the men’s 1,000m time trial at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome here on Sunday (Aug 8).
Mohd Azizulhasni clocked one minute 1.357 seconds, while Australia’s Leigh Hoffman claimed gold in 58.530s, followed by England’s Joseph Truman, who took silver in 59.525s, and another Australian, Tayte Ryan, who won bronze in 59.684s.
The Glasgow 2026 men’s keirin gold medallist said Sunday's race was not part of his original plan, but he volunteered to compete after learning that no Malaysian rider had been entered for the event.
“When I found out there was no representative for the 1,000m, which Fadhil usually competes in, I asked whether any other rider wanted to take part, but no one did.
“They asked whether I was really sure about competing because this event is very challenging, but I agreed because this could be my last Commonwealth Games,” the 38-year-old told Bernama.
Mohd Azizulhasni said the 1,000m time trial was a fitting finale to his Commonwealth Games appearance.
“After performing well in the keirin, this race was more like my final race at the Commonwealth Games. My time today was also more or less the same as what I recorded at the recent national championships.
“I’m happy with that achievement. Of course, I wanted to record a faster time, but my body was already quite tired after competing in the keirin and sprint events… for me, this is a very excellent ending,” said the man fondly known as The Pocket Rocketman.
Mohd Azizulhasni had earlier delivered Malaysia’s seventh gold medal after winning the keirin, completing his collection with a first-ever Commonwealth Games gold.
In the sprint event, the former world champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist’s challenge ended in the quarter-finals after he lost to Hoffman. — Bernama
