Ridwan off to a strong start with bronze medal

NILAI: Mohd Ridwan Sahrom (pic) kicked off the Asean Track Series I with an impressive performance, earning a bronze medal in the men’s elite sprint event at the National Velodrome in Nilai yesterday.

Competing against Mohd Fadhil Zonis, the 24-year-old Ridwan gave a gritty performance on the velodrome in the shootout for the bronze, showcasing his determination and skill.

“For 2025, this is a great starting point for me to go further. This is a positive beginning for me and I hope to stay focused and see how things go for the Asian Track Cycling Championships next month,” said Ridwan after the race.

The match for the bronze medal was a closely contested sprint, with both riders demonstrating tactical prowess and explosive power.

The result adds momentum to Ridwan’s preparations for the Asian meet, where he aims to achieve podium finishes.

Ridwan has made it to the podium last year in the elite ranks in the Asian meet in New Delhi, winning silver in the team sprint with Umar Hasbullah and Fadhil.

Reflecting on his qualifying performance earlier in the day, Ridwan said, “So far, Alhamdulillah, it was 10.0s. It’s not my PB (personal best), which is 10.0s flat with 10.01s but today I clocked 10.078s. It’s close to PB level and I’m happy with the effort.”

In the quarter-finals, he faced his teammate Darwish Putra Mohd Sanusi, securing victory in a tightly contested race.

In the semi-finals, he went head-to-head with Australia’s Sam Gallagher, a formidable opponent known for his sprinting capabilities.

Looking ahead to the Asian meet, Ridwan is cautious but determined.

“I want to do my best and evaluate my condition today and tomorrow. If everything goes well, I want to get a medal.

“The competition will be tough, with strong riders from countries like Australia and South Korea who regularly compete at this level,” he said.

“I’m still working hard for it and this medal is a step in the right direction,” he added.

When asked about his equipment, Ridwan shared that he is currently riding a BT bike, a trusted choice for many track cyclists.
