Azlia pulls out of road race, Yusof placed 33rd

PETALING JAYA: Nur Azlia Syafinaz Mohd Zais and her pilot Nurul Suhada Zainal have been withdrawn from the women’s (B) road race scheduled for today, thus bringing an end to Malaysia’s campaign in Tokyo.

Nur Azlia had difficulty breathing after the women’s road time trial (B) event two days ago and has been scratched from the event on the final day of road para cycling as a precautionary measure.

“Nur Azlia failed to finish the 32km road time trial distance. We took her to the Fuji Speedway Medical Centre as she came down with heat exhaustion.

“She requires further checks after we go back to Malaysia,” said coach Sallehudin Mohd Noh.

Meanwhile, Mohd Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin was placed 33rd out of 39 starters in the men’s road race C1-C3 yesterday. The 23-year-old struggled to cope with the rainy conditions as Britain notched a 1-2 finish through Benjamin Watson (2’04:23) and Graham Finlay 2’05:43. France’s Alexandre Leaute won the bronze in 2’11:06.
