Khir's boxing campaign ends in quarter-finals


GLASGOW: National boxer Khir Akyazlan Azmi's Commonwealth Games campaign in the men's light welterweight (64kg) category ended in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The seasoned campaigner lost to Sean Duffy of Northern Ireland 3-0.

Mohd Fuad Redzuan is the only boxer left in the fray and he is scheduled to fight Ashley Williams of Wales in the men's light flyweight (46-49kg) category on Wednesday.

It was also the end of the road for three other Malaysians boxers in the preliminary rounds.

Mohd Alnazirul Othman who lost to Nick Cooney of Australia 3-0 in the men's lightweight (60kg) while S. Jaya Rahman went down to Kauko Junior of Papua New Guinea 3-0 in the men's flyweight (52kg).

In the men's heavyweight (91kg), Mirage Khan was knocked out by New Zealand's David Light Zealand in the second round.

Malaysia returned home empty-handed from the New Delhi Games in 2010.

The National Sports Council (NSC) have not projected any medals from the boxing team this time.

Malaysia last won a gold through Sapok Biki (light flyweight - 49kg) at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games.

Since then, only Mohd Zamzai Azizi has won a medal for Malaysia - a bronze at the 2002 Manchester Games.
