RM60k boost for Hazirah when she returns to her books

SARAWAK’s bowling sensation Nur Hazirah Ramli (pic) has earned RM60,000 for winning four gold medals so far and she intends to save it for her studies.

“I will save the money for my future as I may want to pursue my studies in mass communications next year and also continue bowling at the same time,” said Hazirah.

“I’ll only know for sure next year.”

The 21-year-old has been a standout competitor in the Malaysia Games (Sukma), consistently striking gold in all her events so far.

Yesterday, Hazirah won her fourth gold in the trios with Lavinia Kho Jia Jie and Asya Dania Azree with a total of 3,591 points, leaving Selangor behind by 97 points. Kedah took the bronze with 3,459 points.

On Saturday, Hazirah won the mixed doubles with partner Tsen Fan Yew. They amassed a total of 2,547 points. She had also won the girls’ singles and doubles with Lavinia.

But for now the reward is the least of her worries as she is more focused on continuing her fine run in the Games.

“I do not want to think about the money. For now, I am fully focused on bowling,” added Hazirah.

Each Sarawakian gold medallist gets RM15,000 from the state government.

Meanwhile, Fan Yew said he was sure of a podium finish after discovering he’d be teamed up with Hazirah.

“I was confident we’d end up on the podium because I knew I could count on Hazirah,” said Fan Yew. The pair appeared to struggle from the fourth game, with Fan Yew scoring just 191 points, his lowest of the competition.

Hazirah too faced difficulties on the lane when she scored 189 points in both the fourth and fifth rounds, but fortunately she managed to recover in the final round, raising her score to 224 points.

“We did lose our momentum briefly towards the end, but we managed to regain our pace and bounce back,” said the 20-year-old Fan Yew.

Men’s triple team final: 1. Izz Naqiuddin Putera-Carl Zharfan Aisy-Azraei Najmi (Nse) 3726 points, 2. Megat Zaqrul Haiqal-Mohd Aqil-Mohd Hariz Adlan (Pen) 3711pts, 3. Ammar Isyraf Mohd Qhairul Nizzam-Zi Jun Wooi-Yew Jin Chong (Prk) 3681pts.
