THE PHILIPPINES were just too hot for the Malaysian basketball team.
In their final match, the side led by B. Guganeswaran lost to the defending champions 44-87 at the Thanh Tri District Sporting Hall in Hanoi yesterday.
In every quarter, the team, fondly known as the Gilas Pilipinas, were dominant. They led the scores 19-10 in the first and went better in the second to lead by 20-12.
In the third quarter, the Philippines, coached by Chot Reyes, asserted their status as the top team in the region when they scored a whopping 29 points while Malaysia managed a meagre 11 points.
They continued the momentum in the final period by adding 19 to Malaysia’s 11.
In six matches, Malaysia collected eight points, which means they are also out of medal contention.
Meanwhile, the women’s team were also humbled by home side Vietnam 65-69. Malaysia must beat the Philippines today to stand a chance of winning a bronze medal.
