Mei Xing draws curtains on 11-year career at Super 100

PETALING JAYA: National doubles shuttler Teoh Mei Xing (pic) has called time on her badminton career at 29, bringing the curtain down on a senior journey spanning more than a decade.

Mei Xing announced her retirement yesterday, confirming that she would not continue competing as an independent player.

Her final appearance came alongside Tan Zhi Yang in the mixed doubles first round at the Malaysian Super 100 in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, where they lost to South Korea’s Jin Sung-ik-Lee Seung-hee.

Mei Xing’s career was marked by frequent partner changes, having teamed up with at least 15 different women’s doubles partners, alongside several combinations in mixed doubles.

Her most successful partnership was with Anna Cheong, with whom she reached a career-high world ranking of No. 17 and won the Syed Modi International and Czech Open titles in 2021.

However, the partnership ended after Anna suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and later left the national team.

Mei Xing came close to replicating that success with Go Pei Kee, reaching world No. 18 and winning the 2024 Malaysian Super 100 title.

They split earlier this year after Pei Kee left the national setup, prompting Mei Xing to return to mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s campaign at the home tournament ended in the men’s doubles semi-finals, where sixth seeds Kang Khai Xing-Lok Hong Quan lost 21-15, 21-10 to South Korea’s Jin Yong-Jo Song-hyun.

Jin Yong-Song-hyun will face compatriots Na Sung-seng-Wang Chan in the final after the latter beat Thailand’s Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn-Worrapol Thongsa-nga 21-10, 21-17.

Play was briefly delayed during the semi-finals due to a leaking roof on Court 1, disrupting a women’s doubles match between South Korea’s Lee Seo-jin-Lee Yeon-woo and Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn-Sabrina Wedler.
