No resting on past laurels

Fresh start: Rosman reminds Pearly-Thinaah to stay alert and manage the little things as they compete in the Denmark Open.

PETALING JAYA: Success is no reason to let one’s guard down.

That is the reminder women’s doubles head coach Rosman Razak has given Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah as they head into next week’s Denmark Open with renewed confidence.

Pearly-Thinaah returned from the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games last week with more than just a bronze medal, having also rediscovered their touch and momentum.

Rosman, however, wants them to treat the Denmark Open as a fresh start and not get too carried away by what they achieved in Japan.

For him, every tournament brings a different challenge and Pearly-Thinaah have to be ready for whatever comes their way.

“We always have to start again because every tournament is different,” said Rosman.

“The process may be going well, but we never know what kind of problems may come up along the way.

“So I think how we handle those problems is more important because every situation is different.”

Rosman added that such problems are not limited to injuries, with even small issues capable of affecting them during a tournament.

That is something they will have to manage carefully, especially with more attention on them as the second seeds.

“Previously, we talked about injuries. Next time, it could be something else, so we have to know how to deal with it,” he said.

“Even if it looks like something small, because their targets are high, it can become a big issue for the two of them.

“Simply put, those small things are very important for us to manage.”

On paper, Pearly-Thinaah have been handed a good draw in Odense.

They have received a first round bye and will face either Hong Kong’s Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam or Scotland’s Julie Macpherson-Clara Torrance in the second round.

However, Pearly-Thinaah were in a similar position last year as the second seeds, only for their campaign to end in the second round against Japan’s Arisa Igarashi-Chiharu Shida.
