PETALING JAYA: Malaysia are assured of at least a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Cairo after beating Estonia 2-0 to reach the mixed team semi-finals on Wednesday (Oct 7).
Malaysia were rarely troubled in the quarter-final at the Cairo International Stadium, taking control from the start, with Tiew Wei Jie beating Karl Pedai 11-7 in the boys’ singles.
Low Zi Yu-Teh Xin Ying followed with a 22-13 win over Kaisa Lepp-Romili Vakk in the girls’ doubles, before Carine Tee stretched the lead by beating Marija Paskotsi 33-26.
Zi Yu then returned with Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal in the mixed doubles to beat Prit Poder-Kaisa Lepp 44-29, while Redzuan-Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim closed out the first game 55-35 against Pedai-Poder.
Malaysia kept up the pressure in the second game, with Wei Jie beating Marti Joost 11-6 before Zi Yu-Nur Aina Maisarah overcame Lumikki Llias-Marija Paskotsi 22-11.
Carine made it 33-14 against Romili Vakk, while Irfan Shazmir-Nur Aina extended the advantage to 44-16 by beating Rasmus Roogsoo-Lumikki Llias in the mixed doubles.
Irfan then joined Damien Ling to finish off the tie with a 55-20 win over Marti Joost-Rasmus Roogsoo in the boys’ doubles.
Malaysia will now face Indonesia in the semi-finals on Friday (Oct 9), with a place in the final at stake.
