Different partners but same target for Tang Jie and Su Yin in Finland

PETALING JAYA: Chen Tang Jie and Cheng Su Yin may have gone their separate ways after the Asian Games, but both will be looking to bounce back at the Arctic Open with their respective partners.

Tang Jie and Su Yin were paired at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games two weeks ago, where they were knocked out in the second round, and both will be hoping for a better run in Vantaa, Finland.

Su Yin, back with Jimmy Wong, faces Japan’s Akira Koga-Natsu Saito in the second round today.

Jimmy-Su Yin made a solid start at the Energia Areena on Tuesday, beating Sweden’s Oscar Reuterhall-Nathalie Wang 21-12, 21-16.

They will need to be wary of Koga-Saito, who advanced after world No. 5 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran retired during the opening game of their first-round match.

Tang Jie, meanwhile, has not returned to regular partner Toh Ee Wei, who is still recovering, but Chan Wen Tse is no stranger to him.

Tang Jie-Wen Tse reunited after a year and cleared the first round with a 21-15, 21-16 win over fellow Malaysians Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing.

A much tougher test awaits them today against top seeds and world No. 1 Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping for a place in the quarter-finals.

Tang Jie-Wen Tse had also played together in two tournaments in the middle of last year when Tang Jie and Ee Wei were going through a difficult period.

They reached the Taiwan Open semi-finals before suffering an early exit at the Malaysian Masters.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing outing for husband-and-wife pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, who had hoped to make amends for their Aichi-Nagoya disappointment in Vantaa.

Instead, the eighth seeds were sent packing in the opening round after going down 27-25, 18-21, 15-21 to England’s Samuel Jones-Lizzie Tolman.

But there was good news in men’s doubles as newly-paired Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King brushed aside bellow Malaysians Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub 21-12, 21-13 in just 26 minutes.
