PETALING JAYA: China’s women shuttlers regained their supremacy in the team event by defeating Japan 3-0 to win the Asian Games gold at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium on Thursday (Sept 24)
The team led by world No. 2 Wang Zhiyi showed they are back where they belong by lifting their 11th Asian Games women’s team crown.
They last won at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.Japan (2018 Jakarta-Palembang) and South Korea (2022 Hangzhou) won at the last two editions respectively.
The 26-year-old Zhiyi, who settled for bronze at this year’s World Championships in New Delhi, lived up to her status as China’s No. 1 singles player by defeating Akane Yamaguchi 14-21, 21-19, 21-17 in a one hour and 20 minutes battle.
World No. 1 pair Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning then battled for 71 minutes to overcome Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto 21-16, 25-23 in the first doubles.
Chen Yufei did not take long to seal the winning point, cruising to a classy 21-10, 21-11 victory over Tomoka Miyazaki in 43 minutes in the second singles as the camp erupted into sheer joy.
