PETALING JAYA: Former national player Lim Yin Siong has joined Canada’s Victor Lai as part of the rising shuttler’s coaching team.

The appointment was announced by Victor’s club, Mandarin Badminton Club, on Wednesday (May 13).

However, Yin Siong will only assist Victor during tournaments and training periods in Asia.

“Mandarin Badminton Club is pleased to welcome coach Lim Yin Siong as our overseas Asia tour on-site coach, supporting Victor Lai during international tournaments and training,” said the club.

Yin Siong, a former men’s doubles player, previously partnered Ismail Saman during his junior days and also coached the Macau national team in 2024.

Victor has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s promising young players after becoming the country’s first men’s singles shuttler to win a bronze medal at the world championships in Paris last year.

He also reached the All-England semi-finals in March.

Yin Siong’s first assignment with Victor came at the Thailand Open, but the Canadian suffered a first round defeat to South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok-jin.

The 20-year-old Victor will not feature in next week’s Malaysian Masters after withdrawing from the tournament.
