PETALING JAYA: There appears to be a shift in the pecking order of Indonesia’s men’s singles after the contrasting fortunes of Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan in the second round of the All-England on Thursday (March 5) in Birmingham.

The 2024 champion Jonatan bowed out after going down 19-21, 12-21 to Taiwan’s Lin Chun-yi, while Thailand SEA Games winner Alwi upset Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen 21-13, 21-19 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Jonatan is currently Indonesia's top player at the world No. 4 followed by the 20-year-old Alwi (14), Moh Zaki (40), Prahdiska Bagas (40), Muhamad Yusuf (50), Anthony Ginting (51), Chico Aura (55).

The 2023 world junior champion Alwi will face second seed and 2023 world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand for a place in the semi-finals on Friday (March 6).

“The race is open with the defeat of many top players … anyone can win it,” Alwi told Media Indonesia.

It is Alwi’s first appearance at the All-England while, surprisingly, it is also Kunlavut’s first quarter-final after failing to get past the early rounds in his previous six attempts.

Except for Li Shifeng, who won the title in 2023, the remaining contenders are all chasing their first All-England crown.

Shifeng will face India’s Lakshya Sen next while the other quarter-final match-ups are Lin Chun-yi versus France’s Christo Popov and Canada’s Victor Lai against Japan’s Koki Watanabe.
