KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles shuttlers Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin brought joy to the home fans after pulling off a stunning win over Denmark’s world No. 12 Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje to reach the Malaysian Open second round.

Pang Ron-Su Yin struggled for form in 2025 but showed great fighting spirit and determination to come away with a 20-22, 21-18, 21-17 win in 72 minutes over Christiansen-Boje at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (Jan 6).

It was the world No. 21 pair’s maiden victory over the Danish duo after losing both their previous meetings.

Pang Ron-Su Yin will take on either world No. 4 teammates Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei or Indonesia’s world No. 10 Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu next for a place in the last eight.

Meanwhile, independent pairs Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing and Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien both crashed out.

Jimmy-Pei Jing, who were making their debuts together in a Super 1000 tournament, went down 10-21, 9-21 to Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet.

Tien Ci-Chiew Sien were forced to retire while trailing 2-14 against China’s Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping after Tien Ci picked up an injury.
