Back-up shuttlers seek valuable ranking points at Syed Modi


 

PETALING JAYA: Several back-up shuttlers led by men’s doubles pair Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing have the opportunity to prove themselves in the Syed Modi India International.

In the absence of the world’s top players, the World Tour Super 300 competition offers the chance for the likes of Aaron-Khai Xing and women’s doubles duo Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting to gain valuable ranking points.

Yesterday, Aaron-Khai Xing got off to a strong start when they overpowered homesters Navin Prasanth-V. Dhileepan 21-11, 21-12 in just 25 minutes in Lucknow.

The 2024 world junior champions will take on either Denmark’s Christian Kjaer-Ramus Kjaer or India’s Mayank Rana-Aaryan Sapiah next in the second round.

Mohd Faiq Masawi-Lok Hong Quan, Fazriq Razif-Bryan Jeremy Goonting, Chia Weijie-Lwi Sheng Hao and Lau Yi Sheng-Lim Tze Jian are also all through to the men’s doubles second round.

Faiq-Hong Quan will face home pair Roy Pruthvi-K. Sai Pratheek next while Fazriq-Bryan will take on Taiwan’s He Zhi-wei-Huang Jui-hsuan.

Weijie-Sheng Hao and Yi Sheng-Tze Jian need to overcome Indians P. Hari Bharathi-S. Bharathsanjai and A. Hariharan-M. R. Arjun respectively next.

Xin Yee-Carmen also booked their spot in the second round after beating home pair Deepshikla Singh-Sonali Singh 21-12, 21-15.

They will next play fellow Malaysians Chong Jie Yu-Vanessa Ng, who overcame another Indian duo Rutaparna Panda-Swetaparna Panda 21-18, 21-13.

In the mixed doubles, Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien brushed past Indians Ayush Agarwal-Shruti Mishra 21-18, 21-14 to set up a meeting against another home duo Ferogh Aman-Rutaparna Panda.

Wee Yee Hern-Vannee Gobi also progressed after beating homesters Sanjai Dhanraj-Anagha Pai 21-10, 21-18.

Yee Hern-Vannee though have a tough task next against Singaporean top seeds Terry Hee-Jin Yu Jia.
