A humble Milo shirt and a proud 100 years as Chong Wei honour Penang badminton

Lee Chong Wei and the future generation of players from Penang.

PETALING JAYA: The image still stands vivid in badminton legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei's mind - a young boy pulling on his first Milo T-shirt, the one that proudly carried Pulau Pinang across his back.

That shirt did not just mark his first state appearance but it marked the beginning of a lifelong bond.

And as the Penang Badminton Association (PBA) celebrated their 100th anniversary in Penang on Sunday (Nov 23), Chong Wei said he felt the weight and wonder of a century that shaped not just champions, but generations.

“Honestly, it’s a very emotional moment," said Chong Wei, the three-time men's singles Olympic Games silver medal winner.

One hundred years is no small milestone as it represented generations of coaches, officials, volunteers and parents who gave their heart and soul to this sport and Chong Wei was happy to be part of it.

"PBA have gone through different eras and challenges but the passion never changed," said Chong Wei.

He added that watching PBA reach a century felt like “seeing your childhood home celebrate its birthday”.

“I’m grateful I could be a small part of this incredible journey. The memories, the friendships, the lessons - they shaped who I am today,” he said.

Chong Wei said he would never forget that first time he represented Penang - the pride of wearing that Milo shirt, the thrill of seeing Pulau Pinang emblazoned at his back.

"I will never forget the first time I represented Penang in MSSM (National Schools)...my first Milo shirt, my first shirt with Pulau Pinang at my back," he said.

“And I hope the next generation will continue this beautiful story for another 100 years and beyond.”
