Sze Fei-Izzuddin survive scare in China Masters opener

PETALING JAYA: Professional men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani escaped a scare to overcome Indonesia’s experimental duo Rian Ardianto-Yeremia Rambitan 12-21, 21-11, 22-20 in the opening round of the China Masters on Tuesday (Sept 16).

Sze Fei-Izzuddin were made to work hard to secure a second round spot after being pushed to the limit by their opponents.

The decider proved especially tense as the Indonesians clawed back from six points down to level at 20-20.

Fortunately, Sze Fei-Izzuddin kept their composure to wrap up the win in 43 minutes.

It was a different story for another Malaysian pair, Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Azriyn Ayub, whose spirited fightback fell short.

Wee Kiong-Azriyn lost 12-21, 21-18, 12-21 to Hong Kong Open semi-finalists Lee Fang-chih-Lee Fang-jen of Taiwan.

After dropping the first game, Wee Kiong-Azriyn rallied to take the second and force a decider, but could not sustain the momentum, going down in 52 minutes.
