Man-Tee knock out home stars Popov brothers to reach third round at worlds

Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong - Tee Kai Wun.

PETALING JAYA:  Doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun fought brilliantly to beat home stars Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov to reach the third round of the World Championships.

Seventh seeds Wei Chong-Kai Wun took 65 minutes to oust the Popov brothers 21-15, 13-21, 21-19 in the second round at the Adidas Arena on Tuesday (Aug 27).

The duo, coached by Herry Iman Pierngadi, were impressive in the opening game but the French pair drew level in the second with some aggressive play.

In the decider, the Malaysians stood solid to clear the tricky hurdle to set up a  match against England's Ben Lane-Sean Vendy next.

The English pair were in superb form too as they demolished South Koreans Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang 21-16, 21-18 in another match.

Said Wei Chong: "Our opponents (the French pair) really played well today, as it was their homeground."

Added Kai Wun: "Their defense was solid, and we did some mistakes before stepping up and playing with more confidence."

On the next match, Wei Chong said: "We are seeded but that should not put pressure on us, we just hope to stay focused."
