Eogene, Zhiyang-Nicole bag Malaysian Int'l Challenge titles

PETALING JAYA: It was double joy for Malaysia in the home International Challenge after shuttlers Eogene Ewe and Tan Zhiyang-Nicole Tan captured the men’s singles and mixed doubles titles respectively.

In a thrilling all-Malaysian final, Eogene came from behind to beat independent player and surprise finalist Lee Jan Jireh 8-15, 15-7, 15-13 at Arena Badminton Perak in Ipoh on Sunday (Aug 17).

It was the 20-year-old Eogene’s second senior title after he won the Slovenian Open in May.

Zhiyang-Nicole had earlier won their maiden senior crown after defeating Singapore’s Kenzie Yoe-Luna Saffana 16-14, 15-10.

Men’s doubles pair and second seeds Mohd Faiq Masawi-Lok Hong Quan, though, could not make it three out of three for Malaysia after going down 7-15, 13-15 to Japan’s top seeds Keiichiro Matsui-Katsuki Tamate.
