Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik win National Sportsman award


PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik have won the 2024 National Sportsman award for the second time on Tuesday (May 13).

At the National Sports Awards ceremony held at Dorsett Grand Subang, Aaron and Wooi Yik added another title after also winning the 2022 edition.

The world No. 5 pair defended their Olympic bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year and won silver at the Asian Team Championships and bronze at the Asian Championships.

Aaron and Wooi Yik won the award in 2022 after becoming Malaysia’s first shuttlers to win at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Other nominees in their category were singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia, weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan, wushu exponent Wong Weng Soon, and pencak silat exponent Abdul Latif Mazakir.

Meanwhile, lawn bowler Nor Farah Ain Abdullah was crowned National Sportswoman for her achievements on the world stage.

Farah won gold at the World Indoor Bowls Championships in the Channel Islands and gold at the Asian Championships in Thailand.

She beat bowler Sin Li Jane, silat exponent Nor Farah Mazlan, wushu exponent Tan Cheong Min, and cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri.

The National Paralympic Sportsman award went to powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who defended his gold medal at the Paris Paralympics and broke the world record while lawn bowler Hasmunirah Malik won the National Paralympic Sportswoman award.
