Soon Huat-Shevon shine, Jin Wei bows out at Asian Championships

PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie became the first Malaysian representatives to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships in Ningbo, China on Thursday (April 10).

The husband and wife duo produced a confident display to oust Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran 21-17, 21-14 in just 39 minutes at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre.

The victory sets up a last-eight showdown against Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu on Friday (April 11).

But it was heartbreak in the women’s singles as Goh Jin Wei’s run came to an end at the hands of Thailand’s Supanida Katethong.

Jin Wei, who had ended her nine year first-round curse earlier this week, was hoping to build on that breakthrough but found Katethong too strong, going down 15-21, 16-21 in straight sets.
