PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have defied the odds to storm into the Olympic Games quarter-finals as group champions.

On Monday (July 29), the world No. 9 fought brilliantly to stun China's world No. 2 Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping 17-21, 21-15, 21-16 in their last Group D match at Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle.

Dongping, who captured the gold in the 2021 Tokyo Games with previous partner Wang Yilyu, was the hot favourite to win the match with Yanzhe but Tang Jie-Ee Wei tore apart the formbook.

It was the world No. 9 pair's second win over Yanzhe-Dongping in four meetings and first success this year.

As group winners, Tang Jie-Ee Wei will avoid the other pairs that finish top of their groups in the last eight draw. A fresh draw will take place and they will face one of the runners-up from the other groups.
