Axelsen pulls out of Indian Open

PETALING JAYA: Denmark's Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn from the men's singles competition in the Indian Open, which starts in New Delhi on Tuesday (Jan 16).

The world No. 1, who reached the semi-finals of the just-concluded Malaysian Open before losing 12-21, 21-19, 17-21 to China's Shi Yuqi, is set to undergo tests for an injury.

"After my match on Saturday (Jan 13), I've been lying in bed.

"After talking to the medical team in Malaysia, I've been advised to get (a further) check-up," he said in a social media post Monday (Jan 15).

"That means that I unfortunately won't be able to travel and be present at the Indian Open this year which is rather disappointing as it has been a tournament where I've loved to play in front of the Indian badminton fans."
