Zii Jia reaches Australian Open semi-finals


PETALING JAYA: Independent shuttler Lee Zii Jia stormed into the semi-finals of the Australian Open after defeating compatriot Ng Tze Yong in a thrilling quarter-finals match on Friday (Aug 4).

The world No 17 Zii Jia fought hard to overcome world No 21 Tze Yong 17-21, 26-24, 21-19 in a 83-minute duel at Quaycentre in Sydney.

Zii Jia will face China’s fast rising singles player Weng Hong Yang in the last four tomorrow (Aug 5).

It was his first semi-finals appearance after suffering early-round exits in six tournaments.

Zii Jia’s last semi-final appearance was in the Swiss Open in March, where he lost 11-21, 14-21 to Koki Watanabe of Japan.
