Game changer as US host world junior meet for first time

PETALING JAYA: The city of Spokane in Washington, United States will host the World Junior Championships from Sept 24-Oct 8.

This is the first time that the United States will be hosting the prestigious competition.

Spokane is the second largest city in Washington and presented several advantages for hosting of the tournament.

“I’m delighted that Spokane will host the World Junior Championships,” said Badminton World Federation (BWF) president Poul Erik Hoyer.

“The USA has long been a priority market for BWF in terms of building up badminton’s profile.

“The hosting of the world junior meet marks an important step in this direction, for it will expose local audiences to a very high standard of badminton, besides leaving a legacy that USA Badminton can build on.”

The national junior players will be looking to do better in the tournament after returning home empty handed in the last two editions in 2019 (Kazan, Russia) and 2022 (Santander, Spain).

The tournament was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Goh Jin Wei was the last Malaysian to win a medal after she captured gold in the girls’ singles in 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
