Zii Jia skips Commonwealth Games to prepare for world meet

PETALING JAYA: Lee Zii Jia has chosen to skip the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to focus on the World Championships.

The Commonwealth Games is scheduled from July 28-Aug 8 while the world meet will be held in Tokyo from Aug 22-28.

Zii Jia said a hectic badminton season had prompted him to miss his Commonwealth Games debut.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Malaysia in the Commonwealth Games but I’ve to humbly turn it down,” said the independent shuttler.

Zii Jia reached the semi-finals of the Indonesian Open last week and is preparing for Malaysian and Singapore Opens.

“The season has been hectic, and I would rather prepare myself to be in the best condition for the World Championships,” he said in an interview with Astro Arena.
