PETALING JAYA: Old-timer Liew Daren has been named in the squad for Thomas Cup Finals.
The 33-year-old will be joined by Lee Zii Jia, Cheam June Wei, Leong Jun Hao and three men's doubles pairs - Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Teo Ee Yi-Ong Yew Sin and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani for the Finals in Aarhus, Denmark, from Oct 3-11.
The selection of Daren is a surprise as another independent shuttler Soong Joo Ven had been in better form, having had beaten Zii Jia during the internal tournament at Badminton Academy Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara last month.
But it looks like the coaching director Wong Choong Hann has a different game plan as he is banking on Daren's experience to add depth in the team.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also confirmed that independent shuttlers Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong have turned down their offer to play in the team event due to family commitments. V Shem became a father on Aug 30 while Wee Kiong will be expecting his second child next month.
In the women's team, Malaysia will be represented by singles players Soniia Cheah, S. Kisona, Goh Jin Wei, Eoon Qi Xuan and doubles shuttlers Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen and Pearly Tan Koong Le-M. Thinaah.
