Chong Wei gives Purple League thumbs up

KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei has given the inaugural Kopiko Purple League the thumbs up.

The 12-club league which started on Nov 25 will see Muar BC announced as the inaugural winner on Sunday.

The 32-year-old Chong Wei said that the league had given the juniors a chance of a lifetime to play against the world’s top players like Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, Lee Hyun-il of South Korea and Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia.

“It is good for the development of the sport. Usually, the youngsters do not get a chance to play with top players. They either do not get to compete in tournaments abroad and when they do, they crash out early,” said Chong Wei.

“This league also gives them a perfect platform to see where they stand.

“Hopefully, we will see some top players from China next year. It is important to get the schedule right so that it will not clash with other tournaments. I believe this league can only get better,” added Chong Wei.

Chong Wei was slotted to represent Petaling BC but withdrew as he is currently under suspension after failing a doping test last August at the World Championships in Denmark.
