Danish settles for sixth as red-hot Puripol, Shanti win 200m in style

PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Danish Iftikhar Mohd Roslee had to settle for sixth in the men’s 200m final as Thailand’s Puripol Boonson continued his red-hot form at the Asian Games.

The 19-year-old Danish finished with a time of 20.89s at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Sunday (Sept 27). 

Puripol, 20, raced to the gold and smashed his Asian Games record by clocking 19.88s and matched the Asian record by China Xie Zhenye.

China’s Huang Youwen was second with a time of 20.45s and followed by Soshi Mizukubo at third 20.56s.

In the women’s 200m final, Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira retained the gold medal she won three years ago by clocking a time of 22.78s.

She was given a tough fight by China’s 17-year-old phenom Chen Yujie (22.93s), but the 30-year-old was strong enough to stay ahead and make sure to be the first to cross the line. 

India’s Harita Bhadra took bronze with a time of 23.20s.
