PETALING JAYA: For years, Malaysian athletes competed under rules they had no hand in shaping. That changes now.

In a landmark governance overhaul, Malaysia Athletics (MA) delegates at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday overwhelmingly approved sweeping amendments to the constitution.

The most significant is on granting athletes direct voting rights on the council for the first time in the federation’s history.

The reform formally recognises athletes as essential stakeholders in the sport’s governance, ensuring their voices carry weight in the organisation’s highest decision-making body.

"It is a declaration that Malaysia Athletics are committed to becoming a stronger, more transparent and future-ready national federation," said MA deputy president Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh

The constitutional amendments also bring MA into full compliance with World Athletics’ governance principles and standards, the culmination of an extensive review process conducted over the past year.

Hisham credited the affiliated state associations for demonstrating unity, maturity and leadership in backing reforms that prioritise the long-term interests of the sport over individual agendas.

The decision reflects a broader shift in international sports governance, one that moves athletes from passive beneficiaries of policy to active architects of it.

With the constitutional alignment now complete, MA say their focus returns squarely to performance.

They have outlined key priorities including athlete development, coaching excellence, strengthening state associations, and building towards the 2027 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
