PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi has made a positive return from injury at the Tom Jones Invitational on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who skipped the Florida Relays two weeks ago due to a Grade One hamstring strain, finished eighth in his heat with a time of 10.17s.
However, his time would not be counted as an official season’s best as it was aided by a tailwind.
His Auburn University teammates Kanyinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon dominated the race, finishing first and second in 9.90s and 9.95s respectively.
Louisiana University athlete Jaiden Reid came in third with a time of 10.01s.
Overall, Azeem finished 14th out of 29 competitors.
“It was a decent race. I still have a lot to fix, especially in the last 30 metres, but I’m happy with it,” said Azeem.
“I’m glad to be running again after a minor setback, and I hope to keep improving from here.”
The young sprinter confirmed that his injury was not serious and remained focused on improving his time as he continues his season. Azeem holds the national 100m record, having clocked 10.09s at the 2022 World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia.
